The Rough Squad was started by two old friends John Kennedy and John Leamy as a shot in the dark in August 2000. Both men carefully selected a fourball from their surrounds to do battle over the links courses of South Wales. A fourball from Limerick set sail to Swansea to take on the feared Clonmel boys who were already on their way to Rosslare. After a fairly dirty encounter, which allegedly ended in a controversial draw, there was a strong desire on both sides to settle the score 12 months later. Re-enforcements were called for and both squads were augmented by 2 extra heavyweights. All hell broke loose across the golf courses of South Wales yet again in 2001, culminating in a last green collapse by one of the more prominent Clonmel boys in the final pairing of the final day handing victory by one (lovely) hole to the courageous Limerick team. Thus the Jockey Trophy was captured by the limerick team and Jim Gould's wife has been trying to get rid of it since. Because of the success of the tours we decided to form an official Golf society and to add a domestic fixture list to our agenda. The Rough Squad is mainly about having the crack. We enjoy a round of golf in a laid back atmosphere with a small bit of competition to keep things bubbling. The society is self- financing and the prizes are intentionally modest so as to keep the emphasis on the fun side of the game. |
